military cloth

A woollen coating fabric with a nap finish. Woven in five-shaft doeskin twill, three up two down, giving a warp face. Other twills are used, but this gives the best results. The colour is bluish grey, and the cloth is used for uniforms in military schools.

French military cloth, about 48-in. wide after fulling; it is made of long staple wool, one-third white and two-thirds black, in natural colour, mixed together.

A good quality Florentine cotton drill cloth, four-shaft weave, such as 88 ends and 72 picks per inch, 20's T., 18's W., dyed khaki colour and used for military purposes. Widths vary from 27-in. to 40-in. In addition to military requirements, many qualities are made for tropical suitings and overalls. They are shipped to India, Egypt, South America, China, etc. Standard makes are: - The last cloth is especially used in India and Argentina for military and other clothing. Khaki drill is also made with wool yarns specially prepared from a standard mixing which is 80 per cent olive brown, 5 per cent indigo, 15 per cent white.

ARPILLERA Arpillera is the term used for the colourful pictures made in many parts of Latin America by appliquéing scraps of fabric onto a hessian backing. During the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile they became politically significant since working-class women used them to depict the reality of life under military rule. As these arpilleras escaped the scrutiny of the male-dominated regime, they provided women with a means of recording events as well as obtaining income from abroad.
